CHAPTER 8

I’d made plans with Mom the night before so Mel and I could sneak out early. Today was going to be rather routine around the ranch. The old man was moving his things into Danny’s, and Janice and Crystal were moving their things into the house with the guys. Other than a recon of the group on the lake, there wasn’t anything special going on.

I grabbed the bottle of tea I poured the night before from the fridge as Mel came out of the bedroom. We were quiet as we stepped toward the door. Mel leaned over and dropped a note onto the couch telling the girls to go see Grandma when they woke up. But Mom would probably be there before they did.

In silence we rolled up Highway 19 in the cool early morning air. The sky was clear and bright. The sun was just getting up over the trees on our right, and as Mel looked out, she shielded her eyes with her hand.

“It’s so pretty,” she said.

“It is. I see it almost every day.”

“How can you under all the trees? There’s really nowhere you can see the sky.”

“I don’t know. I didn’t mean I see the sun every day. Just that I see the sun rise every day.”

She laughed again. “Isn’t that the same?”

I shrugged. “Perspective.”

She laughed once again and reached across the bench seat and took my hand. I squeezed hers and looked at her. She was enjoying the scenery as it zipped past. I looked down and saw I was doing nearly seventy. Not that there was a speed limit, I just didn’t want the moment to end. If it wasn’t for the body armor and weapons, this little ride would feel perfectly normal.

However, all good things must come to an end, and it wasn’t long before we were pulling through the gate. The same woman came out of her kiosk/house and rang the old bell as we passed by. Vincent was waiting in the parking lot when I pulled in, a look of mild confusion on his face.

“Hey,” he said, “didn’t think we’d see you again so soon.”

“Audie said you guys could use some instruction on edible plants around here. Sorry, I didn’t think of that before.”

“No, no, you’re fine. I’m just really happy you came out here to do it! We really could use some advice.”

“We can take a couple of canoes and go down the river and I can show you what I know.”

“That’d be great. Let me grab a few of my folks that really need to be there.”

“We’ll meet you guys down by the boats.”

As we walked down to the water, Mel took it all in. “This place is so pretty. I miss coming here.”

“Looks a little different now,” I said, looking at a group of people thatching in the side of one of the pavilions.

“Yeah, but what a place. To have all this and call it home.”

“You remember living out there, right?” I asked.

“I’ll admit, it wasn’t as comfortable as being at home.
